Meet
Katie Butler

Katie Butler is the Principal Attorney at Torch. She is a business attorney with expertise in internet technology and associated risks. She assists her clients with commercial transactions and compliance initiatives. She is also a sucker for a well-drafted contract.

Katie graduated cum laude from the University of Texas at Arlington shortly before Jerry Jones moved Texas Stadium to town. Katie then attended the University of Arkansas School of Law in Fayetteville, and while Mr. Jones has as much (if not more) influence at the U of A as Texas Stadium, Katie's legal education involved very little football. Rather, her athletic exposure increased heavily when she entered the legal profession as in-house counsel at CrossFit, Inc. and her husband began his career as a collegiate strength and conditioning coach. It was with his support and in this professional role that Katie recognized that it is, in fact, possible to have both a legal career and physical wellness, and Katie has been pursuing that balance ever since.

Knowing that business and legal challenges can be overcome with enough time, determination, and knowledge, Katie seeks out clients that her acuity and tenacity will serve well. Katie has intentionally curated a diverse client portfolio, representing organizations on the revenue spectrum from startups to publicly traded Fortune 500 companies, and across many industries including SaaS, electronics, retail, real estate, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, and education. Through systematically confronting her clients’ issues, Katie has honed the skill of identifying legal risks and comparing them to business needs to recommend the next steps. Katie is renowned for her ability to communicate such complex issues to her clients, and she is working on improving her communication skills with computers (she asked ChatGPT to write this bio, but the result was not good. The jury is still out on whether the one she drafted is better).

Katie’s practice focuses on counseling companies through tech transactions and, often, to develop compliance concerning privacy and cybersecurity laws and regulations. She holds several professional certifications including the International Association of Privacy Professionals CIPP/US, CIPP/E, and CIPT. She enjoys reporting scammers on social media, listening to audiobooks, and scowling at people at the gym. She is an aspiring motorcycle mechanic. You can find her everywhere fun and on "X" as @darthkat3r; connect with her on DuoLingo and Peloton to intensify the accountability for her education and fitness goals.
